Gold Coquina Slab 19

  • 1995

Coquina from Rajasthan, India formed many hundreds of years ago when the area was surrounded by water and where wave action sorted and consolidated the sedimentary rock.  It is mainly composed of calcite, but also includes phosphate, in the form of seashells or coral, which are mixed to form a beautiful collage of contrasting fossils.  Although usually classified as a jasper the grainy texture often puts it in a classification of its own.  There are some softer “grainy” areas which may undercut slightly when working into cabs.

Gold Coquina is also known as Elephant Jasper, Elephant Skin Jasper, Cobra Stone, Calligraphy Stone, and Script Stone.
