Pietersite is a very popular stone from Africa and China, noted for its brilliant chatoyant patterns of lightning blue/black and occasionally red/gold. Highly sought by the lapidary enthusiast, it produces spectacular finished pieces with great brilliance and flash. It is a hard silica material that has been formed by a rare geological replacement process, and is only found in quantity at 3 locations in the world.
