Shattuckite Rock Slab 158
The classic New Cornelia Mine in Ajo, Arizona was one of the best-known localities for Shattuckite in the US. The rare copper silicate is hard to find in good sized gems like this. It exhibits deep navy blue Shattuckite, interspersed with light blue and green Ajoite. This particular stone comes from an older find, dating back to the 1930’s and comes from an original collection.
Shattuckite is a relatively rare copper compound (copper silicate hydroxide) that is found associated with copper deposits. The name Shattuckite is taken from the name of the mine from which it was first discovered (the Shattuck mine) in Arizona in the first part of the 20th century. This slab material is obviously not pure shattuckite, as it is incorporated into a rock along with malachite and hematite. This material is noted for its splays of rich blue and green. Harder than chrysocolla, it takes a beautiful polish and makes very elegant jewelry.
